Lucy is a post-doctoral scientist who is passionate about people on farms and farm systems. Her key research areas are workplace productivity and flexible milking.
Lucy’s research also focuses on wellbeing, sleep, and fatigue among dairy farmers. She believes that supporting farmers is key to a thriving industry and aims to do this through developing practical research solutions.
Lucy has a wealth of practical on-farm knowledge. She has previously worked on dairy farms and supported farmers through running events at DairyNZ. Her background as a consulting officer for DairyNZ and her hands-on experience provide her with a deep understanding of the practicalities and pressures on farms.
Lucy is passionate about at DairyNZ because it allows her to apply science to real-world situations independent of commercial interests. She values “the ability to conduct research that is relevant and interesting to farmers, alongside a collaborative and supportive team”.
Before completing her PhD from Lincoln University, Lucy’s education includes a Bachelor of Science with a double major in animal science and agriculture from Massey University, and a semester at California State University. During her time in California, she studied various aspects of agriculture, including beef grading, plant science, soil science, and land range management. This experience broadened her perspective on different farming systems and their intensiveness.
