Nathan Nelson
Area Manager - Western Southland
Area Manager
Nathan’s grandparents and parents were dairy farmers – and free-range hen farmers too – so it’s no surprise that he’s cracked it by choosing a career in the dairy sector.
“Area managers are the face of DairyNZ for our farmers in the regions and my role is to connect to, help and support them through events, referrals, and other direct interactions. We share the latest tools, services and research from DairyNZ with farmers, and do our best to understand their business needs so we can support farmers’ business goals and objectives.
“We’re right out there working alongside farmers while they’re doing the daily mahi (work). Being a small part of their success journey is so rewarding, as is sharing ideas, learning from the innovators and being challenged to help shape the future-fit farm systems of tomorrow.
“That includes work with rural professionals. Taking a team approach is what we’re about. We also regularly partner with sector stakeholders to deliver impactful events and reduce duplication for farmers.
“I grew up on a dairy farm, so I was keen to work in the sector. It was during my Agricultural Science studies on dairying at Massey University that I set my sights on working for DairyNZ. I started here as a graduate consulting officer (CO), then I became a CO, a senior CO and an extension partner. Now here I am: an area manager based in the Southland office!
“My main message to farmers? We’re here to support you – so reach out to your area manager and find out what’s possible!”
